How freight class is determined

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) sorts LTL freight into 18 classes based on density, stowability, handling, and liability. For most shipments, density alone (lbs per cubic foot) determines class — denser freight gets lower (cheaper) classes. Picking the right class on the BOL prevents reweigh/reclass surprises on the invoice.
